Henry David Thoreau

American poet, essayist, philosopher, naturalist and pacifist Henry David Thoreau (1817–1862) is perhaps best known for Walden, or Life in the Woods written during his stay on Ralph Waldo Emerson’s property outside Concord, MA. Among his other well-known works are Civil Disobedience and The Maine Woods.

This letterpress book reprints a short excerpt from Henry David Thoreau’s April 2, 1852, journal entry. Thoreau anticipates the The Anthropocene Epoc and laments the troubling impact of the “gigantic institution’ of humankind, arguing that mankind might more properly be a prospect from which to glimpse the infinite. This is item number 4 in the ‘Henry’ series.

This book was typeset in Linotype Walbaum and foundry Trump Mediaeval and printed letterpress on Zerkall mouldmade paper in black and red. Bound with a three-hole stitch in a black end sheet, a black paper cover and a red Zerkall Ingres mouldmade paper wrapper printed in opaque white and transparent white. Small octavo format. Limited edition of 80 copies.
