Type Bountiful

2024 / Essay / $250.00
Fine / 64 pp

Type Bountiful celebrates the present-day abundance of type and digital typographic tools by placing it into historical context, demonstrating how the mechanization of typesetting through the late 19th and early 20th centuries set the stage for the typographic plenitude of the digital era. Drawing upon three decades of experience working with many generations of typographic tools, the author provides a thumbnail history of type’s transition from handcraft to industrial to digital mode, comparing and contrasting various methods of type production and composition. At the heart of this story of technological change resides the enduring influence of human spirit. This essay on typographic bounty will be the last limited-edition letterpress book that Andrew Steeves will produce under the Gaspereau Press imprint.

This book was composed on a Model 31 Linotype in 12 point Palatino and printed from the metal on a Vandercook cylinder press. The text paper is Arches Johannot, mouldmade in France. The six illustrations were engraved on maple blocks by George Walker and printed on Gampi Itaboshi handmade paper. The press sheets were folded to make 64 pages (plus the six engravings on Gampi Itaboshi and the doubled endpaper sections); the book measures roughly 9.5 × 6 inches. The sheets were folded, handsewn and casebound, grey cloth over boards. The book comes housed in a black cardstock phase box. All tasks, other than the engraving, were carried out by Andrew Steeves.
